EDCHAT

Last week after our #edchatnz topic I started thinking about motivation and how it may or may not affect student achievement. I have always believed in trying raise someone’s morale the next day.

I expect teachers to focus on the positives with their students in order to help relationship. I need to model this as well. However, morale boosting is not just up to me – it needs to be team effort.

Here are some things I have been doing to raise morale:We began our year with a FOCUS.

  1. We do have school improvement goals, team goals, department goals, and individual professional goals.
  2. I keep to the front of my mind: What makes my environment special? What do we Value?
  3. Frequent walk throughs. Encourage teachers to share best practice and invite our peers in.  There is nothing better than hearing a fellow work mate say how well you are doing.
  4. Give staff time to reflect and be professional. Give them time to be better practitioner. Show staff they are valued.

Being positive is hard. It is easy for teachers (indeed any profession) to get focused on negative aspects of our jobs – unmotivated students, apathetic parents, long hours, cold winters, etc. – it is also easy for a SLT to get pulled into the same whirlpool. That is why it is so important that building morale be a team effort.

What do you think? How do you stay positive?
