Blended learning works well for covering a large amount of course material with learners who are independent and engaged. But how can you get learners to take responsibility for their own education? By putting some best practices to work with the rest of your curriculum, you ensure that you make the most of a combined at-home and in-class effort to make sure you max out the method.

Explain Your Reasons

If your learners don’t truly understand the reasoning behind the idea of combining both independent and in-class learning, you may lose them from day one. Instead, take the time to explain exactly why you’ve chosen blended learning as your method for delivery. Perhaps you want to respect the various degrees of understanding among learners, or you’d rather spend class time putting concepts to work, rather than reading up on them. Make your learners understand the method behind your madness for the best results.

Include Diverse Activities

Any given class has a diverse learning aesthetic. While some prefer to learn by reading, others score better results by doing. Including diverse activities help all employees learn in a comfortable setting. From group discussions to online quizzes, games and even role playing, diversity can drive user engagement for all learning types.

Use Media

You have the most powerful learning tool of all time readily accessible at your fingertips: The Internet. Don’t waste it by creating a blended learning lesson that is dull and repetitive. Why write out a whiteboard question when you could show an engaging video? Why tell your learners a fact when you can have them research at home and report back in class? By maxing out your media, you give your learners the tools to make the most of their experience. Well worth becoming an Microsoft innovative educator (MIE) to support you in this.

At Manawa Tapu (my School) we are aiming to enhance our learning and teaching by fully utilising technology that is available.  However it is important to note that we can’t just throw out everything we know that works for our students.  Blended learning is about combining what we already do so well with technology.  The clip below illustrates this nicely. This was a key point from my blog last time.

The list of digital technologies that might be used for teaching and learning is extensive. It includes: LMSs (Learning Management Systems); MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses); BYOD (bring your own device); BYOT (bring your own technology); BYOC (bring your own connectivity); makerspaces; robotics; digital portfolios; online discussion forums; blogging platforms; wikis, microblogging; back channels; audio recording and music making; image and video editing; creation of infographics, slideshows, and presentations; digital storytelling; social media; collaboration tools; mobile apps; game-based learning and environments; coding and computer programming; augmented and virtual realities; technologies for creating physical or virtual 3D models; gesture-based computing; learning analytics and statistical analysis software; online authoring tools; wearable technology; affective computing; rubric generators; quizzes; online response systems such as polls and surveys; video conferencing; cloud computing; and student feedback tools such as Turnitin, GradeMark, and PeerMark.

E-learning technologies are sometimes defined as asynchronous (any-time) or synchronous (real-time). Flipped learning is that in which traditional teacher instruction is delivered between classes via online video or presentation technologies, and class time is used for application and collaboration. Blended learning melds traditional classroom pedagogies with online learning tools and environments.

Impact of the New National Curriculum on Online Learning

“Pedagogy can be defined as a combination of knowledge and skills required for effective teaching. Online learning requires a different approach to pedagogy, also known as virtual pedagogy or epedagogy.” (University of Adelaide, 2009).

The New Zealand Curriculum is one of the most significant changes to the educational landscape in New Zealand since the introduction of standards based assessment, with the Qualifications Framework and the National Certificate of Education Achievement, NCEA. Today all state schools within New Zealand are expected to be offering educational programmes that are in line with the new curriculum. The overall Vision of the curriculum is to create young people who will be confident, connected, actively involved, and lifelong learners. (The New Zealand Curriculum 2007, p7)

At the student learning end of the New National Curriculum, the curriculum is comprised of Values, Key Competencies and Learning Areas. Values are deeply held beliefs that motivate behaviour such as excellence, innovation, inquiry and curiosity, diversity, equity, ecological sustainability and integrity. The Key Competencies are described as capabilities for living and lifelong learning.

Thinking, using Language, symbols and texts, managing self, relating to others, participating and contributing, will all be competencies that people can expect to draw on throughout life. They also provide the basis for the future learning in these specialised learning areas. These ideals had to be clearly immersed into my vision of online learning. As a school we are using Ultranet and Office 365.

As a staff we have been working through a process that is bringing staff up to speed with the necessary changes, especially within the specific learning areas.

We have been looking at how the nature of our special character and commitment to our independent learner profile marries with the principles, values and key competencies of the NZ Curriculum. There may be some differences in the language used, but mostly we hold very similar views. We believe that through effective pedagogy, best practice in line with our teaching charter, and embedding the independent learner profile, students will develop as young people who will be confident, connected, actively involved, and lifelong learners. What better time to launch this blended leaning environment.
