Perspective

It is often in March that I get down to the real business of the focus of the year. As I discerned over recent weeks I need to reflect upon where I have been and where I want to go. 2018 was a great year for me as an educator. I grew as a teacher and mentor. I also learned the importance of reflection and prayer as a tool for professional development and growing my PLN. I would say that my word for 2018, Passion, was a driving force behind all that I did. I know that my passion for education has grown and I know that I will still use passion as a special word for me.

Now as we begin 2019, my new word for this year will be Perspective; that is ensuring maintaining a work life Perspective to ensure I can be the best I can be in my leadership role. I need to keep what I do in perspective of where my students are. I need to ensure that my perspective remains on what is best for my students. I need to venture out and see new ideas on what other teachers are doing and how they are educating their students. I also need the perspective of seeing my actions and how I treat others through the eyes of my students. I need to remain fair and just to all my students.

My perspectives on many educational topics differ than those of other teachers in my building. Even though we differ, I cannot simply say that they are wrong and that I am right. I need to see perspectives on educational topics from the viewpoints of those that differ from mine. I am not so good at this. This is a work on.

I also need to allow students to show their Perspectives through creativity. I want students to share their Perspectives on topics that we discuss in class. I want students to have their Perspective recognized as important.

Perspective is also important to my career. I need to reflect on what is going to be next. This is a big deal for me. This will be an essential area of reflection for me. Perspective is going to be an area of growth for me.

Vision and Relationships

Without foresight or vision the people will be lost

This week it was important to “join the dots” and bring staff back to the vision. While these are exciting time it is important not to lose the vision.

As we embark on our collaborative experiment with curriculum our focus in our team this week was lesson one and two as we get to know our students. Here are some observations.

Get to know students from day one. Educators must understand how students prefer to learn. Interest surveys work very well in providing this information. Educators need to find multiple ways to measure knowledge because education is not one size fits all. We will only learn how to reach our students by getting to know them on a personal level.

Set high expectations for all students. I let my students know that they can do ANYTHING if they set their minds to it. At the same time, I let them know that their education is an “us” priority as opposed to a “them”, meaning we have to take ownership for our students or lack thereof. We must bring their parents in early and ensure that we communicate with them along the way.

Celebrate success. Teachers must begin to embrace the idea that any growth is growth that should be celebrated. We need to unplug from the idea that students are numbers when clearly every child is unique and different. A gift from God. We must celebrate those differences and adapt our pedagogy to respond to their diversity. Growth is growth, and it is our job to celebrate our students’ accomplishments.

Listen. We have to take students’ feelings into consideration when we make decisions that impact them. By listening to them, we show them that we respect and value their opinion. Even when we plan lessons, we should give them a voice and a choice as to what their learning should look like. When we respect our students, our students will respect us, and they will open their minds for us.

Relationships matter because good teacher-student relationships breed success. By getting to know students, setting high expectations. Vision matters because without going back to the why we can get a little lost.

I have been thinking this week about our NZQA results. They are by the way outstanding. But in the best tradition of great leaders we continue to ask how can we do better.

If we are going to change and improve maybe we need to focus on core components of teaching and learning: understanding not just the why but really get to grips with the why and the how.  We need to ask questions like: Why is feedback effective?  How can we improve the way we approach planning?  Why is one particular questioning strategy better than another?  Asking questions like this, reflecting on what we do, and then refining our practice is a lot easier than starting from scratch.  So what have been the game changers in your own practice over the last few years?

Stategic Planning

It has been a busy week looking at end year events and planning for next year. Strategic planning of this kind can be emotional because people are involved. I include in my reading this week is a recent sabbatical report that outline culture in school. I highly recommend you take time to read it.

I have learned this week the following about planning and leadership.

Trust People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision.

Passion Team members will not be excited about a vision that the leader doesn’t care about. They need to see and feel your passion before they embrace it. Still there must be detail or something behind it.

Relationship Connectivity is important. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Timing Is there ever a good time? For a vision to connect, its timing needs to be right. The right decision at the wrong time is still the wrong decision. Sometimes staff need time to think. This can be difficult and frustrating as a leader.
